As we seek greater tolerance and consciousness of trans issues, we are finding younger and younger kids who end up as inadvertent warriors in the endeavor. If, as many transgender adults suggest, one’s awareness of gender nonconformity begins before puberty, it makes sense to address these concerns early.

Going through puberty is a pain for nearly everybody. Having to do it twice, the second time as an adult seeking gender reassignment, is another challenge altogether. An emerging idea in the medical community is to delay puberty onset through the use of hormone blockers. This allows the young person to grow up and make informed choices about more permanent solutions when they are old enough.

The parents of these children are inspiring: they put a degree of faith in their children that is almost unbelievable. Their choice to being loving and supportive should not seem like great feats, but in reality, they are exceptional in a society where very few people comprehend the complexity of gender.

And boy is he high profile.

Dr. Schwyzer (it’s pronounced Shwitzer, so you know) kept popping up on my radar. His sexuality education work on Jezebel, and Healthy is the New Skinny kept drawing my attention as he wrote on everything from body image and consent to jizzing on someone’s face. And I my admiration for his writing grew: both as a man skilled at crafting a highly enjoyable written piece but also for his choice of topics that few others of his demographics were touching without a moralistic, religiously-based tone.

Some feminists are not fans. They critique his ego, even argue that his style of communication is “mass grooming an audience to have sex with him.” Others contend that by taking prominence in the field of feminism, he is taking the place that would otherwise be occupied by a talented female.

And there are many more who take issue with his personal life prior to sobriety. After re-revealing to blogger Clarisse Thorne (a friend of this site) his tale of bottoming out during addiction (a story I will let him tell you in his own words on this interview), he has been taking fire from a number of directions, garnering everything from thousands of hate letters and tweets to a Facebook group whose sole purpose is taking him down. The controversy has caused him to resign from several of the sites for which he wrote and his career trajectory is now in a state of flux.

Before we talked, he warned me that even those who give him a platform right now are subject to much antipathy. But as an educator, I think more talk is good.

As of yesterday -due to a legal injunction- this interview is the last one in which he tells the story of his pre-sobriety days. But more importantly, we talk about other stuff: the future of feminism, the possibility for mentorship of young women by adult men, the meaning of that cumming on someone’s face, what does age mean in a relationship and much, much more.

We have all heard of women’s shelters, we know that there are resources for the victims of intimate partner violence. And often, these folks have family and friends. But something prevents them from taking those steps. In the case of Wendy Maldonado, we may never know why she opted to kill her abusive husband, but we are given some explanation as to why she didn’t think she could just leave.

Raised in a household where her mother was abused, failed time and again by the system, Wendy feared there was no other way to protect her children or herself . After two decades of endless beatings- the title “every f-ing day of my life” comes from her reply to the 911 operator of how frequently she was hit- she took a hammer to her husband Aaron’s head. After calling the police to report the killing, Wendy reported her biggest fear was that “he didn’t die.”

Wendy Maldonado received a 10 year sentence- the result of a plea that she assumed would give her a better outcome than a trial, given her distrust of the authorities who had failed to protect her throughout her marriage- but others can still be helped. Perhaps by learning more about her story, we can find insights about places where we can all be a part of a solution to the problem of intimate partner violence.

• Look for signs of abuse in the lives of people you know.
• Speak up if you have concerns.
• Help the abused person find the resources they need and be an ally if someone needs assistance leaving an abusive situation
• If you are in a situation where you fear your partner or feel trapped, please seek out help. You are not alone.

The discrepancy in size between the average model/actress and the average woman has become a chasm of difference. For a female in this climate to feel even confidence in her body is to choose between a rigorous and unreasonable adherence to weight maintenance or a “fuck you all” attitude.  The constant pressure to “achieve” physical perfection has real life consequences: everything from danger to one’s health and formidable depression to being a huge ridiculous waste of time and resources.

Today we look more at this struggle. This is partly because of Spirituality’s friend from school, Religion. Those two definitely don’t need each other to be successful, but they’re seen together frequently. And while lots of people have told me how awesome and supportive and generous Religion is, we’re personally not that kind of friends. We pass each other in the hall and nod.

But for many, their religion’s take on sexuality can be a life or death situation. Enter Malcolm Burt who set out to uncover what a number of religions say about homosexuality. He speaks to a variety of people from a number of perspectives and, through the rollercoaster ride of responses, he finds a moment of personal enlightenment.

I’m of the opinion that if someone can control your sexuality- what you think or do all by yourself or privately with the consent of another- then that someone can control anything about you. And I’m also of the opinion that any entity that says you as a person are inherently flawed (but you can overcome it with our help!) is trying to sell you something. But then again, I’m just one of those friends who is still sorting out her own life.
