Riley made an astounding realization in the toy store: some toys are sold as being for boys and some are for girls. But what if you want the “other” toys? Why can’t everyone play with whatever they want? And while she’s too young to get this now, she’s clearly astute enough that she’ll soon recognize that the toys sold to boys encourage being badass builders and do-ers, fighting and winning and, in the process, learning socially acceptable masculinity. Girls’ toys, on the other hand, will encourage being interested in beauty, fashion, homemaking (to a lesser extent than it used to) and (to a greater extent than it used to:) dating and being famous.

“What would happen is…” is followed by a series of predictions: dire warnings of neighborhoods deteriorating,  nonchalant assertions that nothing would change but income stream for the city, and whatever else we can imagine.

But Nevada actually already knows what would happen. At least, they know what would happen if prostitution was legal in brothels outside the big city. Cause they did it. And Dr. Barbara Brents, a sociology professor at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas set out to discover the reality of a place where sex work is legal and regulated. Her findings were published in the phenomenal book The State of Sex: Tourism, Sex and Sin In the New American Heartland. 

Dr. Brents, along with her co-authors, blazed a spectacular trail: describing the unique history of Nevada and why it chose to be the only state in the nation where sex work is legal, detailing the complex history of politics and economics involved, uncovering the nuances of life in the various types of brothels, and interviewing hundreds of sex workers and brothel owners about their work. All of this is set in context by discussing the nature of emotional labor that intersects with any job where customers are made to feel special and personally attended to.

I don’t think I have Body Dysmorphic Disorder (I suspect I just live in American culture), but it it something with which I can completely empathize.  With the intense scrutiny placed on physical appearance and the complex way in which attractiveness affects a person’s treatment by others, it’s not surprising that BDD affects 1-2% of the population (7-15% of those who seek cosmetic surgery). In fact, I think it’s surprising that it’s not more common and might be under-diagnosed. The self-tests for BDD seem pretty broadly applicable.

This film, however, looks at some of the more acute cases of BDD: some who refuse to even be filmed because they’re convinced of their own hideousness, despite perfectly normal appearance.

While there are treatments for this kind of anxiety, it would also be prudent for us to all do our part to change the climate that currently encourages this kind of thinking. Every time we emphasize the idea of perfection in appearance, publicly critique the “flaws” of others or otherwise denigrate people for not meeting some random standard of looks, we  are accomplices. Let’s be kinder to each other and to ourselves and place more value what we DO.

As we seek greater tolerance and consciousness of trans issues, we are finding younger and younger kids who end up as inadvertent warriors in the endeavor. If, as many transgender adults suggest, one’s awareness of gender nonconformity begins before puberty, it makes sense to address these concerns early.

Going through puberty is a pain for nearly everybody. Having to do it twice, the second time as an adult seeking gender reassignment, is another challenge altogether. An emerging idea in the medical community is to delay puberty onset through the use of hormone blockers. This allows the young person to grow up and make informed choices about more permanent solutions when they are old enough.

The parents of these children are inspiring: they put a degree of faith in their children that is almost unbelievable. Their choice to being loving and supportive should not seem like great feats, but in reality, they are exceptional in a society where very few people comprehend the complexity of gender.
