Recording the podcast is almost always a treat, but sometimes i really let my fangirl flag fly. This is such a time, when I got to interview legal scholar Eric Berkowitz about his new book The Boundaries of Desire: A Century of Good Sex, Bad Laws, and Changing Identities. Having read his previous book Sex and Punishment: Four Thousand Years of Judging Desire, I was stoked to pick his brain about the origins of legal provisions around sexuality and get him to predict the future of such legislation.
And holy cats did he deliver. We talked about the impossibly useless regulations around minors, rules about who can get married, the controversy of decriminalizing sex work, the ways in which power structures use sex laws to maintain social control and the future of abortion rights, among other things. Prepare for a nerdgasm of epic proportions with this one, kids.
