What Would a Black Sexual Utopia Look Like? An Interview with Tracie Gilbert

ErikaKapinPhotography_Tracie_2016_12_09_MG_8259Sex educator Tracie Gilbert asks workshop attendees, “what would Black sexuality look like, existing outside of white supremacy?” The answers are varied, but demonstrate a general tendency towards egalitarian, body positive, pleasure-centered sexuality. Her question forces us to think about the ways in which anti-Blackness has affected- and continues to affect- the way sex education is conducted for young African Americans. This is a sample of her work as an instructor, drawing connections for attendees between history, iconography, religion and education.

She and I sit down to talk about her work as an educator, the legacy of racist events like the Tuskegee experiments, the interviews she’s doing for her dissertation, how pop culture reflects and affects our deeply held beliefs and a whole lot more.
