Ulysses “Butch” Slaughter carries himself with precision and calm confidence. Upon first meeting him I felt the need to sit upright in my chair, and possibly change into more formal clothes. Immediately, though, I was bowled over by his authenticity, as he frankly shared his origin story- which includes the traumatic memory of witnessing the murder of his mother at the hands of his father.
We talked about how this, and other experiences as a young Black man in Chicago- including a stint in a Catholic school for future priests- shaped his current worldview and the desire to get people to connect more genuinely. He tells me what he aims to create with his events, Sex in the Struggle, by bringing diverse groups of people together to discuss sexuality.
