From Working with Offenders to Helping Couples: Interview with Dr Adam Assoian

Some of Dr Adam Assoian’s first experiences as a therapist was working with sex offenders, many who were adolescents themselves, most who were required to seek counseling services as part of their probation or parole.

It was a complex job, and he learned a lot about the cracks in our legal system’s approach to child sexual abuse and the challenges of talking about consent.

Now he’s in his own practice, Ally Psychological Services, where his work is more likely to focus on helping couples navigate boundaries instead of setting ultimatums.

We chat about the problems with how our culture deals with teen sexting, how to talk about consent with kids, whether psychiatrists are useful, prescriptions versus therapy, dealing with workplace power differentials, and much much more!
